Growth Modification With Orthodontics

Early Orthodontic Treatment To Prevent Dental Issues

In the past, parents have been told that the ideal time to bring their kids in for their first orthodontist appointment is as soon as all of their permanent teeth have erupted, which is typically around age 12. At that point, the child would get braces, and they would be on their way to a new, healthy smile. Unfortunately, by that point many dental issues could have already developed, meaning that orthodontic treatment would take longer than what was actually necessary to correct them.

At Pedodontics, P.C., your local pediatric dental and orthodontic experts here in Omaha, we recommend that your child receive orthodontic treatment at an even early age, while they are still in a stage of rapid development between the ages of 6 and 11 years old. While all of their permanent teeth may have not come in yet, the other parts of their mouth are still rapidly developing such as their jaw and facial bones. Just like how teeth can come in crooked, the jaw and facial bones can also grow in different directions that are not ideal, leading to various dental issues such as a misaligned bite or not enough room for teeth to erupt. Once your kids reach age 12, this development is usually complete, and can be much more difficult to correct.

What Does Early Orthodontic Treatment Do For My Child?

Creating A Path For Dental Development

Interceptive orthodontic care is designed to prevent dental issues in children, guiding their growth to create an ideal dental environment for future development and ensure optimal oral health. While many think that orthodontics is strictly about straightening teeth with braces, treatment is actually broken up into two different phases. Braces is actually phase two, while phase one is more focused on treating very big potential problems such as: jaw problems, horizontal and vertical bite problems, dental arch expansion, and bad dental habit. Using special orthodontic appliances, all of these issues can be treated before your children get their braces, making for a faster and more comfortable orthodontic treatment.

Fortifying Self-Esteem

During their teen years, your kids may become more self conscious in school among their friends, who will likely be undergoing orthodontic treatment as well since braces are typically a right of passage that most teens go through. By starting your children on an early orthodontic treatment plan, you can ensure that their experience with braces is as comfortable as possible, and they get enjoy a new, perfect smile that they get to show off to all of their friends for school pictures and any other occasion.
