When you’re looking for an orthodontist in or around Omaha, NE, it’s our goal at Pedodontics, P.C. to goabove and beyond in providing all of your orthodontic needs. We’re proud to offer a comprehensive selection of both dental treatments and orthodontic treatments, including several types of braces, in order to guarantee a patient’s healthy smile. If you’re wearing braces (or you’re about to wear braces), you’ll notice that several lifestyle changes will have to be made, including your oral hygiene regimen. Since great oral hygiene is the first and most important step toward a healthy smile, we’d like to give you a few hygiene tips when you’re wearing braces.

Brush Four Times a Day

While you may be used to brushing twice a day, it’s actually best to brush four times when you have braces. The reason for this is because braces provide many crevices for food particles and decay-causing bacteria to get trapped in. In order to combat this, we recommend brushing four times during the day: once after every meal and then once before bedtime.

Floss Daily as Well

In the same way that food can get stuck in your braces, it can get stuck between your teeth as well. This is why it’s important to make sure to floss daily so you can remove any trapped food particles. Flossing can be tricky while you’re wearing braces, which is why we recommend using a floss threader if you need a little help.

Drink Lots of Water

Drinking plenty of water is one of the healthiest things you can do for your mouth. Drinking water carries plenty of benefits that include keeping your mouth clean, fighting cavities, neutralizing the level of acid in your mouth, and even preventing bad breath. While many drinks are actually filled with sugar or acid that will damage your teeth (soda, energy drinks, sports drinks, fruit juices, etc.), water always remains the healthiest choice.

Bring a Dental Kit with You

While it’s highly recommended to brush your teeth after every meal when you have braces, we also understand that a patient may not be at home and available to brush afterward. Not to worry though – when you bring a dental kit with you, you can clean your teeth on the go. Make sure to pack a travel toothbrush, some toothpaste, floss, and any other important dental items so that you’ll be able to brush and floss your teeth even if you’re not at home.
