Orthodontic Resolutions for 2018

Orthodontic Resolutions for 2018
Posted on 01/23/2018

blogJan2018As your orthodontist and children’s dentist in Omaha, NE, we at Pedodontics, P.C. want to wish you a Happy New Year! Now, if you’re like most people, you’ve probably taken the time to make a few resolutions for 2018. The year may have already started, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t add a resolution or two to that list. After all, no one will know – and it’ll be for a good cause! If you want to make your orthodontic treatment with braces so much smoother for the new year, we recommend considering these following orthodontic and dental resolutions.

Improve Your Brushing

Brushing your teeth is a cornerstone of your oral health so if you want to make any orthodontic or dental resolutions, this should be the first place you start! Some quick tips that we can offer for improving your brushing are to:

  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush.
  • Use fluoridated toothpaste.
  • Brush at a 45-degree angle to get under the gum line.
  • Brush your teeth using small, circular motions.
  • Brush for about two minutes each time.
  • Brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth as well.
  • Brush four times per day.

Use a Water Pick

When you wear braces, flossing properly can be an incredibly difficult task. It can be frustrating and take a long time, which will lead to many patients not even wanting to bother doing it. However, there’s a great alternative to traditional flossing – a water pick! Water picks are just as effective, but much easier to use for people with braces. Just point it at your teeth and it’ll spray a stream of water that’ll dislodge any food particles in the area. Try to use a water pick at least once every day.

Add Mouthwash to Your Oral Hygiene Regimen

An often-forgotten part of a patient’s oral hygiene regimen is rinsing with mouthwash. A fluoride rinse is capable of helping to strengthen your teeth. All you have to do is swish about two teaspoons of it around in your mouth for one minute before spitting it out.

Limit the Sugar You Consume

It may not be what anyone really wants to hear (we all love sugar!), but the quickest way to improve your dental health is to cut back on the amount of sugar that you consume. Sugar interacts with the bacteria that’s in your mouth to create acids that will eat away at your tooth enamel and cause tooth decay. While we wouldn’t expect you to quit eating sugary foods completely, limiting the amount of sugar that you consume won’t just benefit your teeth, but it can boost your overall health as well.

Keep up with Your Appointments

Finally, we’d like to stress the importance of maintaining your regular appointments with your orthodontist in Omaha, NE. Regularly seeing your orthodontist when you’re supposed to will help make sure that your orthodontic treatment is progressing as planned and it will keep your treatment length right on track.
