Preparing your child for the orthodontist

At Pedodontics, P.C., our mission is to help each of our patients develop a healthy, beautiful smile that will last them a lifetime. We are proud to provide premium quality pediatric dental and orthodontic care to patients throughout the Omaha, NE area, and we work hard to make every visit to our office enjoyable. We know that for some children, visiting the orthodontist's office can be an anxiety-inducing experience. We do all we can to make our office environment welcoming and inviting, but as a parent, there are a number of steps you can take to prepare your child for the orthodontist.

Start the Conversation

Perhaps the simplest and most effective thing you can do as a parent to help your child prepare for the orthodontist is to talk honestly and openly with them about their feelings. Whether your child is feeling anxious or not, starting a dialogue with them about their visit will help them to voice their feelings and concerns, giving you an opportunity to address them and explain what to expect at the office. Keep in mind that many young children don't have the language to easily express their feelings, so asking lots of questions can help them communicate their feelings.

Set Up a Reward

For many children, a visit to the orthodontist is a lot more bearable if they know there's a light at the end of the tunnel. Setting up a fun reward after the visit – such as a special treat or a small new toy – is a great way to help alleviate your child's stress. It also has the added benefit of helping them to create a positive association with the orthodontist, setting the stage for more anxiety-free visits in the future.

Talk About the Benefits

For young children, the benefits of orthodontic treatment may not always be obvious. Your child may not understand that orthodontic treatment is necessary if they want to have a healthy, beautiful smile. Before the visit, talk with your child and explain how orthodontic treatment will affect their smile, showing them that straighter teeth are both more aesthetically pleasing and easier to keep clean. If your child understands the reasons for the visit, they may be more at ease during the appointment.
