What is a fluoride treatment?

Fluoride is a mineral that keeps your teeth strong by strengthening the enamel, which in turn makes your teeth more resistant to decay. While there are ways to ensure your child gets enough fluoride at home, including toothpaste, water, and mouthwashes, there are times when we feel a child could benefit from a higher dose. In those cases, we will perform a fluoride treatment here in the office. Your Pedodontics, P.C. dentist will apply a medical-strength fluoride gel to their teeth before leaving their appointment. You will be instructed on after-care instructions, as some forms will require a time period where you can’t eat or drink after the application.

How do I remove fluoride from my teeth once I leave the dentist?

Well, the simplest answer is – you don’t! The fluoride should remain on the teeth as it works its magic. You will be directed on how long you need to wait before allowing your child to eat or drink anything. Some types of treatments require no wait time, with suggestions for the best types of food to enjoy. After a topical fluoride treatment, teeth should not be brushed until bedtime. There are even times it’s recommended to wait until the next morning to brush your teeth, to give the varnish enough time to effectively absorb. Typical brushing and flossing are all that need to be done after a fluoride treatment.
