What to Expect on Your Child’s First Dentist Visit

Posted on 12/15/2020

As a parent, it can feel intimidating to plan all of the important check ups and milestones for their first years of life, and making sure you time things right is a primary concern. You might also be wondering what questions to ask when you take your child to see the dentist for the first time, and how to ensure that they are comfortable, and receive the proper care. Our team at Pedadontics, P.C. works with patients of all ages, and has some tips and ideas for tackling your child’s first dentist appointment.

When is My Child Old Enough to Go to the Dentist

It is recommended that every child receive their first dental checkup when they are one year old, or at least within six months of their first tooth appearing. It is very important to start your child’s dental journey at this time, because this way the dentist can get an idea of how the teeth will come in, what to look out for, and begin to predict whether any specific treatment will be required down the road.

You and Your Child Can Get Comfortable

Going to the dentist can feel scary sometimes, especially for children. That is why we work so hard at Pedadontics, P.C. to ensure that you and your child feel at home in our office, and we work to develop a strong and trusting relationship. Your child’s first dental appointment is not only an opportunity to get that first, baseline checkup, it is also a chance to spend some time with a new or already trusted doctor, introducing your child, and familiarizing yourself with their approach. It is important to make sure that you and your child feel comfortable and cared for.

Choose a Dentist That Specializes in Pediatric Care

Making an appointment with a dentist that specializes in pediatric, or early, dentistry, ensures that you will be meeting with someone who knows how to speak to, and care for children, so that you can relax and know they are in good hands.

Pedodontics, P.C. is completely committed to caring for children from their first year of life all the way to early adulthood. We understand what an environment needs to make a child feel safe, at home, and excited to go to the dentist and receive the crucial dental care that they need. We help patients in Omaha, NE and surrounding areas achieve brilliant smiles to last lifetime, and cannot wait to meet you. Request an appointment or contact us today!

5 Truths About Invisalign Treatment for Kids

Posted on 11/19/2021

Invisalign is one of the most popular treatments for orthodontics today. And while it remains to be a popular option for teens and adults, it can also work for children as well! Many orthodontists recommend that children start early orthodontic treatment at around 7 years old, and Invisalign can be a great option for children! If you’re a parent who is thinking of having their child start orthodontic treatment, Pedodontics, P.C. can help! Our doctors and staff are here to advise and guide you on what type of treatment plan will work for you and your child. If you’re interested in getting Invisalign for your child, here are 5 things you should know about Invisalign kids.

Emphasis 5 Things About Invisalign Kids

  • Invisalign Can Work for Complex Cases– Invisalign can still work for complicated cases. If your child suffers from an aggressive bite or has really crooked teeth, Invisalign can still fix the problem! Before, Invisalign used to be for minor cases. Today, technology has advanced, so Invisalign can fix almost all concerns.
  • They Must Chew– In order for Invisalign to work, your child must chew on what’s called “chewies”, or rubbery items for them to bite down on. It allows the trays to stick to the teeth more firmly. When a new Invisalign tray is placed about every 2 weeks, there is sometimes a gap between the teeth and aligners. The chewies allow the tray to be pushed onto the teeth more readily, allowing the teeth to move into the tray better. When they bite down on the chewies, this moves the teeth slightly in the desired direction, thereby increasing blood flow around the tooth.
  • Easy to Clean Than Braces– With traditional metal braces, food can trap inside the brackets and wires. With Invisalign clear aligners, you don’t have that hassle. Because you can take out your aligners, your child can brush and floss normally.
  • Eat Whatever They Want– Hard, crunchy, and sticky foods are still allowed! All the good stuff your child loves wouldn’t be allowed with metal braces. Because they can remove the trays when they eat, virtually nothing is off-limits.
  • Keep Track If They’re Wearing Them– Each Invisalign aligner tray has these tiny blue compliance indicators on them. As your child wears the aligners, they begin to fade. You and your orthodontist will easily be able to tell if your child has been wearing their aligners as they should.

6 Tips for Choosing the Right Pediatric Dentist

Posted on 11/19/2021

Finding a pediatric dentist can be tough for any parent. We all want our child to be healthy, and that includes your child’s oral health. By starting early, you’ll be able to prevent your child’s teeth from decaying and becoming infected. But what if your child doesn’t have a pediatric dentist to go to? How do you look for one? At Pedodontics, P.C., we have 6 tips to help parents find the right pediatric dentist for their kids. Whether you’re a new parent, just moved, or just looking for a new one, learn how to find the best dentists for your child.

How to Choose a Dentist For Your Child

  • Welcoming, Comfortable (and Fun!) Environment– Choosing a pediatric dentist who is welcoming and fun is always the best. You also want to make sure that they provide your child with a comfortable setting for them! It’s also important for the staff to be accommodating and friendly. A dental office doesn’t have to be a scary place for your little one; your child’s dental home should be inviting, exciting, clean, and fun!
  • Qualified & Certified– In addition to dental school, a pediatric dentist is trained in children’s behavior, including dental anxiety and special needs. These unique qualifications make them qualified to handle children patients. You’ll also want to find one that is board-certified. This means that the dentist has gone through the necessary steps to become a specialist. By being certified, they are able to demonstrate expertise and knowledge. They also should have a license that permits them to practice their profession in your state. It is a good choice to find out if the kids’ dentist is licensed to practice in your local area.
  • Accepts Insurance– For many parents, a big factor when choosing a dentist is to consider if your child’s dentist office accepts your insurance coverage or not. This can offset the cost. However, not every dental office accepts every kind of insurance plan. Talk with the office manager to see what treatments are covered through your insurance.
  • Accessible Location– When looking for the best pediatric dentist near you, take into consideration how close the office is to your home. This means you physically can get to their office quickly and efficiently. You’ll want a dentist that is within a reasonable distance in the case of an emergency.
  • Diverse Services– You’ll want to find a kid-friendly dentist that offers the widest range of services possible. This can include specialty dentistry options like orthodontics, whitening, wisdom teeth removal, or oral surgery. Also, see if they also treat teens and adolescents as well, since your child will be growing. Even if you don’t need these types of services at the moment, your child may in the future and it’s nice to know you won’t have to search outside for extra services.
  • Quality Service– A good way to find a dentist is to get references from friends or family members. Ask them any questions or concerns you have to get a feel if the dental practice is a good match for your child. A simple conversation can be a great indicator of their office atmosphere. Such information will help you make a sensible choice for your kids.

Posted on 10/05/2021

There is a common misconception that is frequently passed around in conversations about pediatric dentistry: Pediatric dentists are for children and once your child becomes a teen, he or she should start seeing an adult dentist. Here at Pedodontics P.C., your local pediatric dentist in Omaha, we have a pretty good idea of what pediatric dentists are good for and where their specialties lie—which is why we have put together this guide to teenage dentistry. Find out whether your teeth should still see a pediatric dentist and why our kid’s dentist in Omaha is more than just a kid’s dentist!

What is a Pediatric Dentist?

Pediatric dentists, including our kids’ dentist in Omaha, are dentists that specialize in treating the unique dental circumstances of young people. What About My Teen?

You may be wondering if it is appropriate to bring your teen to our pediatric dentist in Omaha and the answer is yes! Not only is it appropriate, but it is in fact preferred that your child sees a pediatric dentist throughout their teenage years. What’s more is that we offer orthodontic care including braces and clear braces, which are often more effective on teens than adults!

What is the Right Age for My Child to Start Orthodontic Treatment?

Posted on 10/05/2021

Many parents are curious as to what age they should let their children start orthodontic treatment? Is it necessary? If your child has crooked teeth, chances are they’ll need braces at some point. But the truth is, there is no set age that is the best. Every child is different, and at Pedodontics, P.C., we can make a customized treatment plan just for your child. Our early treatment plan can help your child’s teeth shift as they grow, giving them straight teeth by the time they’re an adult. If you’re a parent that is curious about having your child get braces, here’s what you need to know.

Factors to Consider

  • What Problems Do They Have?– The American Association of Orthodontics (AAO) recommends that children visit an orthodontist at around the age of 7, or when their dentist recommends. An orthodontist can evaluate a child’s bite, oral habits, and jaw structure to determine if orthodontic treatment is necessary. Some early warning signs of orthodontic problems include:
    • – Trouble chewing or biting
    • – Mouth breathing
    • – Finger sucking
    • – Crowding or misplaced teeth
    • – Difficulty speaking
    • – Cheek biting or biting into the roof of the mouth
    • – Protruding teeth
    • – Teeth grinding or clenching

If an orthodontist identifies a tooth problem, this will require early treatment, which is when a child receives braces. Overall, most kids get braces when they are between 9 and 14 years old.

  • What to Expect During Treatment– Early orthodontic treatment helps prevent oral problems from happening and corrects issues that cannot be addressed once a child’s face and jaw stop growing. Once your orthodontist decides they need treatment, you and your child will decide what type of braces or appliance they need. Once your orthodontist decides that they need treatment, you and your child will decide what type of braces or appliance they need. Oftentimes, kids will get traditional metal braces. In other cases, kids may qualify for clear removable braces or other orthodontic devices. An orthodontist may also recommend that your child have one or more teeth removed to create additional space in the mouth.
  • Side Effects– With regular checkups and consultations, your orthodontist will take every precaution to ensure side effects are taken into consideration. While rare, potential side effects of braces can include: tooth decay, relapse (teeth reverting to original position), allergic reactions, and other issues.

How Long Do Braces Take to Straighten Your Teeth?

Posted on 10/05/2021

One of the biggest questions patients ask is how long do braces take to make your teeth straight. On average, it takes about 12 to 24 months, but some patients do require up to 3 years of treatment. At the end of the day, everyone is different and there is no “one-size-fits-all” solution. At Pedodontics, P.C., we want everyone to receive a customized treatment plan that works for them and their needs. If you are looking for an estimate as to how long your braces will take, here is what you should take into consideration.

Factors that Determine the Length of Treatment

Different factors play into how long an orthodontic treatment can last.

  • Type of treatment– There are several options a patient can choose when it comes to braces (depending on what they are eligible for and how much they’re willing to spend). This includes conventional metal braces, ceramic braces, lingual braces, and clear braces.
  • Age– Young patients (teens and children) tend to get results faster than adults because their jaws are still growing, making the teeth easier to move. This, however, doesn’t mean all adults need to wear braces for two years or more. It also depends on someone’s dental history.
  • Severity– Another factor is the severity of your orthodontic issue. Mild spacing/crowding can be fixed in a year or less, while severe cases could take much longer. Many different orthodontic problems determine how long a treatment plan will take.
  • Patient Compliance– An orthodontic patient needs to follow all instructions provided by his or her orthodontist to ensure a successful treatment. If you do decide to get Invisalign, this plan requires discipline because you have the option to take off the aligners. This also includes maintaining proper oral hygiene, keeping up with your dental appointments, and using your orthodontic appliance as directed.
  • Accidents/Emergencies– If the brackets in your braces break or if you lose an Invisalign tray, this can mean having to go back and adjust your treatment plan duration.

Can You Speed Up the Treatment Process?

In some cases, you can speed up orthodontic treatment. Speak with your orthodontist and see if they offer any alternative options to braces.

Staying on Top of Your Oral Hygiene This Summer

Posted on 06/17/2021

At Pedodontics, P.C., we are celebrating that summer is here! The season is unique this year because the pandemic is slowly coming to a close and everything is opening back up! Now that more people are itching to meet up with loved ones in person, schedules are changing. For lots of children, that means that summer break is here! And with everything from barbecues to state fairs, there are indulgences everywhere during the summer season. In our office, we strive to educate all of our patients in the Omaha community about oral health and maintenance. Here are some tips to keep you and your family’s oral health strong this year.

Summer Oral Health Tips

Here are some tips to keep you healthy this Summer:

  • See your dentist this summer– Before you dive deep into summer, make sure to make an appointment with your dentist and orthodontist. Dental issues are a cumulative problem, so before you start enjoying those sugary treats/drinks, make sure your teeth are cleaned and checked.
  • Keep a healthy diet– While it’s great to indulge during the summer, make sure to do so in moderation. Sugar can cause cavities, so it’s important to choose healthier options, such as fruit, yogurt, and dark chocolate. Overall, it’s important to maintain a balanced diet regularly.
  • Sip through a straw– If you are drinking something sugary and acidic, drinking through a straw. This helps minimize the beverage’s contact with teeth, resulting in fewer stains and reduces the risk for cavities. To be eco-friendly, use a reusable or paper straw. Also, rinse with water after drinking to wash away the sugar and acid.
  • Keep a travel set– If you are making travel plans, make sure to keep a teeth-cleaning travel set. Pack a travel-size toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss to keep handy for vacations, sleep-overs, and road trips.
  • Avoid ice– It’s easy to chew on the ice during hot days, however, it’s hard on your teeth. Use ice to chill drinks . . . not as something to eat.
  • Wear a mouthguard– If you are planning to play any contact sports, wear a mouthguard. A properly fitting mouth guard can reduce the chance of dental injuries by up to 60 times.
  • Protect your lips– Part of caring for your oral health is making sure your lips are protected. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen on your lips. This helps to protect them from the sun’s harmful rays and reduces the risk of skin cancer.

Invisible Braces

Posted on 11/15/2020

Pedodontics, P.C. proudly offers quality orthodontic and dental care for children and teenagers in Omaha, NE. Our doctors and staff are dedicated to helping patients achieve beautiful, healthy smiles. We feature many types of braces and treatment options to suit your child’s orthodontic treatment needs, from traditional metal braces to clear braces. We want you to know more about our invisible ceramic braces!

What Should I Know About Invisible Braces?

More Discreet and Comfortable

Ceramic braces are similar to traditional metal braces, except the brackets are made of a translucent material that resembles the natural color of your teeth. Since the ceramic material blends in with the tooth, the hardware is much less noticeable. We recommend them for older teenagers and adults who want a more subtle treatment option compared to metal braces. Though you may experience some minor discomfort after your initial fitting, you’ll find invisible braces much more comfortable compared to traditional braces. The ceramic material eliminates the metal-on-metal effect that can cause discomfort when eating with metal utensils. The greatest benefit of ceramic braces is they help you maintain a beautiful smile discreetly, so you can feel confident both during your treatment and once you’ve achieved a new smile.

Give Extra Attention When Brushing and Flossing

Since they are not removable during treatment, both metal and ceramic braces require more time and care when brushing and flossing as food debris and plaque have many places to hide. Invisible braces require extra attention in your oral hygiene routine since they are more fragile than metal braces and elastic ties can become discolored, but the ties will be changed at every orthodontist visit.

Make sure to thoroughly clean every tooth and brush as you would normally, using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, for at least two minutes at least twice per day. We recommend special tools like a bristled interdental toothbrush (proxabrush) or water pick (oral irrigator) that can help you to more thoroughly clean the tiny spaces around bands, wires, and brackets. Floss at least once per day to remove any leftover debris you may have missed with brushing. To get into the small nooks and crannies, we recommend a floss threader.

You should brush and floss after any meal or large snack—this prohibits food from becoming trapped and keeps harmful bacteria from forming in the brackets. It’s important to keep on top of your oral hygiene routine to avoid extra trips to the dentist for cleanings and adjustments.

Use Even More Caution with Your Braces

It is important to always use caution with hard or tough foods—but there are foods that can be even more damaging when it comes to braces. Harder foods like popcorn are commonly known as off limits, since kernels can damage brackets. Softer foods are usually a safer choice, as they are easier to consume during your orthodontic treatment. We recommend maintaining a diet high in fiber-rich foods, fruits, and vegetables and avoiding anything sticky (gum, candy), hard (ice, nuts, corn, apples, bagels, chips), overly sugary (cake, ice cream, cookies, pie, candy, soda), or large pieces of food that are difficult to chew and break down.

Just like you want to protect your braces from tough foods, you’ll also want to protect them from harsh contact. Mouth guards are always recommended for contact sports. You should also never use your teeth or braces as a tool to open bottles, packaging, or other items—this can cause severe damage, and may result in an emergency visit to the dentist. Damaging brackets can also be extremely painful, and can impact your treatment time frame. We always recommend being as gentle as possible with your braces, to help you complete your treatment as soon as possible and achieve your best smile even faster!

Follow Your Orthodontist’s Advice

Remember to follow any and all instructions your orthodontist provides you. If you have any questions about taking care of your braces, your diet, or any other questions or concerns, always be sure to ask your doctor. We are here to help you with your treatment, and invisible braces are an important step towards achieving a beautiful healthy smile for life!

Benefits of Early Orthodontic Treatment in Omaha, NE

Posted on 10/15/2020

Early treatment refers to orthodontic intervention when primary or “baby” teeth are still present. Our team at Pedodontics, P.C. wants to address orthodontic problems early, making treatment plans easier and more cost-effective for children and their families. The goal of early treatment is to minimize or eliminate the need for a secondary stage of orthodontics. Our Omaha, NE orthodontists can improve smiles at any age, but early attention can often prevent future obstacles. Pedodontics, P.C. will gladly help any patient make an informed decision concerning the optimal time for his or her treatment and when Omaha braces may be necessary.

Orthodontics for Children

The American Academy of Orthodontists recommends that your child have an orthodontic examination by age seven — for two very good reasons:

  • There’s a wide disparity in tooth development at age seven. Our Omaha orthodontist will be able to tell if your child has an orthodontic problem or not. By this time, they can determine whether or not there will be adequate room in the mouth to accommodate the permanent teeth.
  • There are many conditions far easier to treat if they’re caught at an early stage when a child’s natural growth is in full swing. For example, a palatal expander appliance can effectively treat a child’s crossbite because their jaw is still growing rapidly.

There are other problems commonly seen in childhood that may also benefit from orthodontic treatment. These include the early or late loss of baby teeth, persistent thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, and mouth breathing. If you notice any of these symptoms, it may be time to visit our office. But keep in mind that early screening doesn’t mean treatment has to start right away. In fact, most kids do not begin active orthodontic treatment until they’re 9-14 years old. At this time, you can discuss braces in Omaha, NE with our orthodontic team.

Advantages of Early Treatment in Omaha

While early orthodontic treatment for kids can be used to fix many different bite problems, it can also provide many other benefits:

  • It can reduce the complexity of later orthodontic treatment.
  • It will save you and your child time and money in the long run – orthodontic problems that are left alone will likely get worse over time.
  • It can create facial symmetry by influencing jaw growth.
  • It will reduce the need for tooth extraction.
  • It may even give your child a boost of self-esteem!

How To Support Sustainable Dentist Practices At Home

Posted on 07/13/2020

Our doctor and our team at Pedodontics P.C. as a whole are aspiring to make changes one day at a time by adapting to different resources that support sustainable dentistry. Every little change helps! This is why we’ve decided to ask our patients to stand with us against the effects of climate change and join us in changing our practices in order to leave a better world for the future. Our changes begin here at our dentistry in our Omaha office location but we hope that all of our readers will take initiative to begin changes around the world. The following are some tips that we’ve come up with to help combat climate change!

Avoid Water Waste by Using Less Water

Because water is usually available at our fingertips, it makes sense that we often take its presence for granted. We have to remember, however, that there are many places around the world where potable water is not at people’s disposal. When using water, be mindful of closing the tap during unnecessary times such as when you’re brushing your teeth, scrubbing your dishes, only running the dishwasher/washing machine when you have a full load, etc.

Consider Stocking All-Natural Cleaning Supplies

There are actually many great green cleaning supplies available in the market that do just as great a job as regular cleaning supplies, but without the chemicals that are detrimental to our earth and our oceans. Cleaning solutions exist for your kitchen surface, wood and tile floor, bathrooms, laundry, glass/mirrors, etc. that are biodegradable and plant/mineral based. Not only do they avoid harmful effects in the environment, they are also crafted to be safe for your family, non-toxic, fragrance free (for those with allergies or sensitivities), and non-GMO.

Alternative Green Dental Supplies

Instead of Plastic Toothbrushes…

Use bamboo toothbrushes! Bamboo toothbrushes are biodegradable, unlike common plastic toothbrushes. Some even come with charcoal bristles for a more natural way of cleaning!

Instead of Regular Toothpaste…

Use charcoal powder! Charcoal has activated ingredients that both clean and kill bad oral bacteria. This non-toxic option is a great substitute for normal toothpastes that contain chemicals and preservatives. Some powders even include mint essential oils to freshen your breath!

Instead of Plastic Tongue Cleaners…

Use reusable tongue cleaners! There are stainless steel and copper tongue cleaners in the market that won’t rust or collect mold—just purchase once and keep cleaning and reusing!

Instead of Plastic Floss…

Use biodegradable silk floss! A great alternative, silk floss is actually dipped in natural wax and coated with natural mint essential oils and is 100% biodegradable! It will do the same job as plastic floss, but won’t add to the earth’s nearly insurmountable pollution issue.
